Dear CAML members, chères et chers members de l’ACBM,

I am writing in response to the Federation’s announcement regarding the cancellation of the in-person Congress in London, Ontario.

First, in acknowledging these challenging times, I hope that you and your loved ones are safe and healthy. Nous vivons présentement une situation exceptionnelle qui oblige à revoir la majorité de nos engagements personnels et professionnels.

Second, I would like to mention that the CAML Board will convene as soon as possible to discuss the Association’s response. We take the Federation’s strategic maneuver seriously and will weigh the pros and cons of holding an online meeting. Having attended a Congress COVID-19 information session yesterday, I can share that I was impressed by the Federation’s contingency plan and commitment to maintain a impactful forum for scholarly communications. Je suis aussi impressionné par la plateforme numérique suggérée qui permettra une réunion virtuelle afin de préserver l’essentiel de nos rencontres annuelles.

I will inform you of the Board’s decision in the upcoming days. In the meantime, I invite you to contact me with any questions and/or concerns you might have regarding the cancellation of the in-person meeting, or a potential move to an online meeting. I will bring those to the Board’s attention.

Dear Federation members,

First, I wanted to thank each and every one of you for your collaboration and patience as we worked together to determine a contingency plan for Congress 2020.

After extensive consultations with members and key partners and a thorough evaluation of all possible scenarios, the Federation – in close collaboration with Western University – has decided there will not be an in-person Congress in 2020. However, we have developed a proposal to move Congress online, and will be working closely with associations who wish to participate.

Our number one priority is protecting public health and the health of all Congress participants. By taking Congress online, we can help “flatten the curve” while providing associations with alternate options for disseminating their members’ research.

We will continue to encourage multidisciplinary engagement through association programming and open events, all under the 2020 theme Bridging Divides: Confronting Colonialism and Anti-Black Racism, which remains at the heart of our plans. We will be consulting members on ways to achieve a strong focus on this important theme.

Early next week, we will be hosting a webinar for associations’ representatives who wish to get a preview of what a virtual Congress will look like. More details will follow, as will more information about our cancellation and refund procedures.

In order to move forward with logistical preparations, we will be asking associations to confirm their participation in a virtual Congress 2020 by March 27. We are committed to working closely with all of you as we make this transition, so that together we can ensure you are best equipped to host a successful online conference.

Moving Congress online is going to be a learning curve for everyone involved, but also a unique opportunity we can embrace together. Thank you, and we look forward to the opportunity to work with you to bring a virtual Congress to life.

Chères et chers membres de la Fédération,

D’abord, je tiens à vous remercier de votre collaboration et de votre patience durant l’élaboration d’un plan d’urgence pour le Congrès 2020.

Après de longues consultations avec nos membres et nos partenaires clés et un examen exhaustif des différents scénarios possibles, la Fédération a décidé en étroite collaboration avec l’Université Western qu'il n'y aura pas de Congrès en personne en 2020. Cependant, nous avons développé une proposition pour tenir un Congrès virtuel, et nous travaillerons en étroite collaboration avec les associations qui souhaitent participer.

Notre priorité numéro un est de protéger la santé du public et celle des congressistes. En tenant un Congrès virtuel, nous contribuons à « aplatir la courbe » de la COVID-19, en offrant aux associations d’autres façons de diffuser les recherches de leurs membres.



Nous continuerons à encourager l'engagement multidisciplinaire par le biais de programmes associatifs et d'événements ouverts, le tout sur le thème Bâtir des passerelles : combattre le colonialisme et le racisme anti-Noirs qui demeure au cœur de notre démarche. Nous consulterons nos membres sur les moyens de se concentrer fortement sur cet important thème.


En début de semaine prochaine, nous organiserons un webinaire pour les représentant(e)s des associations qui souhaitent avoir un aperçu de ce à quoi ressemblera un Congrès virtuel. Plus de détails suivront, ainsi que plus d'informations sur nos procédures d'annulation et de remboursement.


Afin d'aller de l'avant dans nos préparatifs logistiques, nous demanderons aux associations de confirmer leur participation à un Congrès 2020 virtuel d'ici le 27 mars. Nous nous engageons à travailler en étroite collaboration avec vous tout au long de cette transition, afin qu'ensemble nous puissions nous assurer que vous ayez les outils nécessaires pour organiser virtuellement vos conférences.


La tenue d’un Congrès virtuel représente un défi pour tous, mais aussi une occasion unique que nous pouvons saisir ensemble. Merci à tous. Nous nous réjouissons à l’idée de travailler avec vous pour donner vie à un Congrès virtuel.
