Dear CAML members, chères et chers membres de l’ACBM,

You have most likely received the Federation’s communication regarding the cancellation of Congress 2020.
Vous avez probablement reçu la communication de la Fédération concernant l'annulation du Congrès 2020.

Following that communication (copied below), I received another email from Gabriel Miller, President and CEO of the Federation, in which he stated, “I want to reassure you that we remain committed to working with you, and other interested associations, who have chosen to move programming online. We do recognize that the wording of our announcement may generate confusion within your membership.”

The Board acknowledges that the Federation, independent of Western University, is willing to support CAML’s online conference. We also understand the need to evaluate the situation as it evolves in the upcoming days. It is possible that we too may have to cancel the conference, or adopt an abridged format, should we conclude that we cannot provide you with an optimal experience. We will evaluate our options as quickly as possible and make the best decision under the circumstances.

Nous comprenons également la nécessité d'évaluer la situation telle qu'elle évolue dans les prochains jours. Dear members and friends of the Federation,

On March 18, 2020, we made the difficult decision to cancel Congress 2020 at Western University, and began consulting our members on a proposal to move the event online. Our priority was to protect public health, while giving our scholarly associations an alternative to share their research and connect with their communities.

But in those conversations, we realized that many of us are feeling tired and overstretched. We are worn out trying to balance new demands at home and in our work. The burden is especially heavy for marginalized, racialized and disabled people, as this crisis compounds existing inequities and creates new ones.

So today, I am announcing that we will no longer move forward with Congress this year, in any form, including online. It is time to pause and give ourselves some space to meet our immediate needs.

Our members have told us that we need to turn our energy to other things right now: picking up groceries for our parents; caring for children who are home without school or childcare; answering emails from worried students; and making the shift to virtual classrooms.

Cancelling Congress is the right decision, but it is a difficult one. It is a unique event, built on people’s hard work and generosity, and we owe our thanks to association Presidents and Directors, Program Chairs, and Local Arrangement Coordinators.

To Alan Shepard, President of Western University: please accept our deepest gratitude for the work of your talented and dedicated organizing team, led by Academic Convenor Jeff Tennant and Project Manager Cliff Fielder, who have poured their heart and soul into this Congress. We will not forget your spirit of partnership, and we look forward to collaborating with you again.

We know some of the most important questions remain to be answered, including that of this year’s Congress theme – Bridging Divides: Confronting Colonialism and Anti-Black Racism. Despite this cancellation and the immediate challenges of COVID-19, we remain committed to having these critical conversations, and we will be working with all of our Congress partners and member associations to make that a reality.
While the past few weeks have been difficult, I was inspired many times by the commitment and collaboration of my staff and our association leaders. It is a privilege to work with them and on behalf of our members. Thank you, be safe, and let’s look forward to many more conversations to come.

Chers membres et amis de la Fédération,

Le 18 mars 2020, nous avons dû prendre la décision difficile d’annuler le Congrès 2020 à l’Université Western. Nous avons ensuite proposé à nos membres d’organiser l’événement en ligne. Notre priorité était de protéger la santé publique, tout en offrant aux associations savantes l’opportunité de partager leur recherche et de rester connecté avec leurs communautés.

Mais en discutant avec vous, nous avons réalisé que nous sommes nombreux à être fatigués et surmenés. Il n’est pas facile de jongler avec les nouvelles demandes, autant à la maison qu’au travail. La situation est d’autant plus difficile pour les personnes marginalisées, racialisées, et handicapées, car la crise aggrave les inégalités déjà présentes dans notre société, et en crée de nouvelles.

Aujourd’hui, je vous annonce que le Congrès n’aura pas lieu cette année, ni en ligne ni sous quelque forme que ce soit. Il est temps de prendre une pause et de réserver l’espace nécessaire pour répondre aux besoins immédiats.

Nos membres nous ont confié qu’il est temps de consacrer notre énergie à d’autres priorités : faire l’épicerie pour nos parents âgés, nous occuper de nos enfants qui ne vont plus à l’école ni au service de garde, répondre aux courriels d’étudiants inquiets, et faire la transition vers les classes virtuelles.

Annuler le Congrès est le bon choix, mais la décision a été difficile à prendre. Cet événement unique repose sur le travail soutenu et la générosité de nombreuses personnes, et nous devons des remerciements aux présidents, présidentes, directeurs et directrices d’associations, responsables de programmes, et coordonnateurs et coordonnatrices locaux.
